The Acropolis of Athens

In the middle of the city of Athens rises the hill of the Acropolis, which hosts the most important sanctuary of the ancient city, dedicated primarily to its patron goddess, the wise Athena. The monuments of the Acropolis, harmoniously combined with the natural environment, are unique masterpieces of ancient architecture and art, while the Parthenon is one of the most easily recognizable monuments in the world. The Acropolis complex of the 5th century BC reflected the grandeur, power and wealth of democratic Athens during the ‘golden age’ of Pericles. Since then, it has had an everlasting influence on human intellectual and artistic creation.
