Mount Athos

The monastic state on Mount Athos, the so-called “garden of the Virgin Mary”, has been an important reference point of Orthodox Christianity since the 10th century AD and has enjoyed autonomy ever since. With its 20 monasteries, the Athonite state has been developed in a natural landscape of unparalleled beauty, harmoniously integrated with the environment. Women are not allowed to enter there. The layout and iconography of its monasteries have had a tremendous influence on the development of ecclesiastical architecture and monumental painting.
