Delos

Delos, the small arid island in the center of the Cyclades, was, according to mythology, the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. It hosted the important panhellenic sanctuary of Apollo, which was also the seat of the powerful Athenian Alliance in the 5th century BC, and was a rich, cosmopolitan and commercial port until the Roman times. Today the whole island is an extensive archaeological site where important monuments of the Greco-Roman world are preserved.
